Emerging Pollution Response Technology Evaluation: Adsorbents
Abstract:
The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center (USCG RDC) partnered with the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement Oil Spill Preparedness Division (BSEE OSPD) to carry out independent evaluations of emerging pollution response technologies. This report documents the background, planning, and testing of four sorbent samples from different manufacturers at the National Oil Spill Response and Renewable Energy Test Facility (Ohmsett) with diesel fuel and Hydrocal 300 (a medium viscosity refined naphthenic base oil). RDC and BSEE OSPD evaluated the sorbents with a series of experiments designed to provide the most relevant data about each sorbent for the benefit of spill responders, including an ASTM F726 test to measure a sorbents maximum oil capacity. The project team selected AquaFlex, Earthwise Sorbents, Imbibitive Technologies and MFNS Technologies to provide their sorbents with high Technology Readiness Level for testing. In addition, AquaFlex provided its wringer system; hence, its Open-Cell Foam was tested for reusability.
