Abstract:

Significant and dangerous misconceptions exist concerning the potential use of smokeless propellants as the main explosive charge in a large vehicle borne improvised explosive devices VBIED. The unrestricted availability of smokeless powder, coupled with a lack of awareness and appreciation for its destructive potential, constitute a considerable blind spot available for exploitation by violent extremist organizations and individuals.
