Abstract:

Five high damping alloys, including Titanium Nickel, Copper Aluminum Nickel, Copper Zinc Aluminum, Copper Manganese and Iron Chromium Molybdenum, were heat treated to produce optimum damping conditions. The strain dependence of specific damping capacity was established using the resonant dwell technique. The results were compared with those of past investigations. For the CuAlNi alloy, six different heat treatment conditions were considered. The CuAlNi specimens were cold worked to determine the effect on damping. An industrial survey was conducted to determine the practicality of shipboard application of these alloys. A comparison of the advantagesdisadvantages of each alloy was accomplished and recommendations were made for further study. Theses.
