Abstract:

This is a progress report on developing Y-123 wire for an HTSC motor. Y-123 powder lot size was increased to 10 kilograms. Spools of 125-micron diameter green fiber 50-60 vol Y-123 are routinely produced. Wire development is focused on co-fired silver coated monofilaments. The silver coating has improved thickness and uniformity. Continuous coated green fiber has been made at lengths up to 150 feet. The major emphasis has been on continuous co-firing of wire in a reel-to-reel operation. The length of the heated zones in the furnace limits wire length, furnace modifications are being designed. Continuously sintered Ag-clad wire has been produced. The longest length without a break has been 19 feet. Design was completed for a drum DC homopolar with an iron magnetic current. Parts and equipment have been ordered or are being machined. The motor will be assembled and tested with copper coils in the following quarters.
