Abstract:

A simulation and research program was conducted in support of the U. S. Army Remotely Piloted Vehicle Target AcquisitionDesignation Aerial Reconnaissance System. The research was directed towards RPV operation in a jamming environment, using video bandwidth reductioncompression techniques. Two simulation studies were conducted to investigate the effects of bandwidth compression on operator target detection and recognition performance and the effects of frame rate reduction on operator sensor slewing performance during the search phase of the RPV mission. The results of the two studies provided data to define levels of bits per picture element bandwidth compression and frames per second frame update rate in combination with other selected RPV system and operating conditions.
