Abstract:

This series of six tests evaluated performance of three types of light-weight non-structural bulkhead panels when subjected to berthing compartment fire conditions. The tests were conducted in full-scale compartments constructed aboard the test vessel ALBERT E. WATTS at the U.S. Coast Guard Fire and Safety Test Detachment, Mobile, Alabama. Each test compartment simulated a typical Coast Guard cutter 2-man chief petty officer berthing compartment arrangement, including standard shipboard furniture bunks, clothing lockers, bookrack and chair. A realistic fuel load was provided, including clothing, publication, and standard issue mattresses and bedding. Fuel load arrangement, test compartment ventilation, method of ignition and test duration 60 minutes were similar in all cases.
