Airdrop Controlled Exit (ACE) Systems
Abstract:
A study was conducted to identify and compare techniques which minimize ground dispersion of either air dropped troops or platform loads caused by the time increment between sequential exit from the aircraft. Twenty 20 concepts for platform loads and seven 7 concepts for personnel airdrop were determined to have sufficient merit for consideration as operational airdrop systems. Each of these systems reduce drop zone dispersion from that achieved with the presently operational systems. Some of the concepts, however, are diminished in value from a systems standpoint in that attainment of shorter drop zones is accomplished only by introducing some operationally undesirable system characteristic. A comparative evaluation is performed by a scheme that produces figures of merit whereby concepts for either type of airdrop may be compared among themselves and with the currently operational systems.
