Abstract:

This monograph is a critical review of current art in selecting, designing, analyzing, and using cushions. It is concerned with materials which will deform significantly under applied forces. The function of the cushion is to mitigate the effects of shock or vibration on an object. The main thrust of this monograph will be directed at materials rather than devices. The basic objective of this monograph is to bring all persons concerned with cushions - theoretician, materials engineer, designer, specification writer, producer, and user - to the same point of reference. A secondary but important objective is to indicate potentials and to suggest possible new lines of endeavor which might produce fruitful results.
