A Low-Frequency Radar of Modern Design

Abstract:

Since the latter portions of World War 2, the major air-search radar systems have been operated at a frequency of 1300 Mc. Fleet evaluation studies of these radars indicated that systems operating at this high frequency failed to detect high-altitude targets during periods of abnormal propagation, while the old-low-frequency radars were not affected. A new radar system with an antenna small enough to permit installation on destroyers is to be constructed to operate at a frequency of 420-450 Mc. Tubes are available for radar which will permit a transmitter peak power of 1.5 megawatts and a receiver noise figure of 5 decibels.
