A Cosmic Perspective for the Warfighter: Why the Space Domain Must Stand on Its Own

reportActive / Technical Report | Accesssion Number: AD1180281 | Open PDF

Abstract:

A core body of scientific knowledge must serve as the foundation for national security activities in space, applied especially to domain orientation. One-to-one warfighting domain analogies are no longer viable in describing the space domain. Warfare analogies imported from the sea domain and applied to space, for example, do not work. We must establish a corpus of knowledge that marries space science with military framing. Importing principles from other domains (e.g., control of the sea or maritime law from the sea domain and applying it to space) is misguided and limiting. With a cosmic perspective, the warfighter can proceed with securing a complete standalone domain upon which to build a military theory.
