High Specific Power Multi Junction Thin Film PV
Abstract:
The University of Toledo focused research and development on materials and devices to advance photovoltaic (PV) technology and knowledge of High Specific Power Multi-Junction Thin film PV. Studied PV technologies focused on materials capable of both high efficiencies and low total weight including perovskites, III-V, II-VI, and I-III- V-12 absorbers with the goal of optimizing and combining absorbers to create highly efficient tandem solar cells. UT refined and applied unique diagnostic instrumentation for optical, electrical, and energy phenomena fundamental to understanding material properties and behavior as they depend upon surface and interface chemistry, electronic band structure, structural and impurity defects, energy barriers, and the intrinsic relationships between electronic/structural properties and device performance. These studies advanced the knowledge of these thin film technologies to enable breakthroughs in photovoltaic power sources reliability and efficiency.
