Use of Innovative Technologies in Protective Clothing Design
Abstract:
The LEHP Garment Team considered innovative technologies to replace sewn seams in CB garments. The Garment Team investigated other innovative methodologies, such as ultrasonic seam sealing, use of various seam tapes for added strength and protection, and the selection of equipment to be used in the process. This investigation also included the review of various seam constructions to ensure that there was compatibility between the fabric seam and the innovative techniques that were investigated. Strong, sew-free waterproof seams were achieved using a combination of ultrasonic sealing with a modified Jentschmann 4796-2-20 V1 B machine and Adhesive Films, Inc., Black EXF-652, one-inch width). Modifications to the Jentschmann machine, seam strength test results, and investigations of other seaming methods are also described in this report.
