Perspectives on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of the Air Force
Abstract:
After months of protests across the United States in 2020 over systemic racial injustice, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) redoubled its efforts to address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE and I) issues. These recent efforts have followed a decades-long series of Department of the Air Force (DAF) investments in making the U.S. military's workforce - particularly its leadership ranks - more diverse. However, challenges remain. For instance, racial/ethnic minorities and women continue to be underrepresented in the DAF's leadership and DAF pilots' population. Given the persistence of these disparities and the current policy imperative to embrace meaningful changes, the DAF needs a more comprehensive understanding of the scope and effectiveness of its DE and I efforts and potential paths forward.
