Abstract:

As the nations highest-ranking military officer, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff presides over the Joint Chiefs and provides military advice to the civilian leadership. While the roots of the position can be traced to World War II, the Chairmanship was formally established in 1949 by President Harry S. Truman. This revised edition of The Chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the creation of the position. It examines the evolving roles of the Chairman and Vice Chairman through an updated historical essay and contains career biographies of all twenty Chairmen and all eleven Vice Chairmen. It also has sections on the Joint Chiefs conference room (known as The Tank), the Chairman's and Vice Chairman's flags, the Joint Chiefs of Staff badge, and the Chairman's quarters. Lavishly illustrated with color and black and white photographs, it is a fitting textual and visual tribute to the nations most senior military officers.
