Report of the Field Manual Review Board, Annex B. Evolution of the United States Army Field Manual: Valley Forge to Vietnam
Abstract:
This study covers generally the subject of the evolution of the field manual in the United States Army from Valley Forge to the present era. Considerable attention is given to the historical background of military literature. Historically, in the United States, the evolution of the field manual was dependent, for many years, upon the writings and publications of private individuals. The advent of the military educational system, that is, the Military Academy, The War College, The Command and General and Staff College, and the Schools of the Arms and Services, standardized the materials to be included in the various manuals.
