Abstract:

Meiotic homologous recombination is vital for accurate segregation of the homologous chromosomes in the first meiotic division, and infertility, miscarriage and developmental disabilities can result when this process is impaired. Additionally, meiotic homologous recombination generates genetic diversity. During meiosis, recombination predominantly occurs at recombination hotspots determined by the DNA-binding protein PRDM9, which is essential for fertility. PRDM9 marks where homologous recombination can occur with a histone modification, H3K4me3.
