Failure Analysis of Composite Cylinders under Compressive Axial Loading

Abstract:

The compressive behavior of filament-wound carbon-fiber/epoxy composite cylinders subjected to axial compression, especially with varying loading angles, is not widely understood, so far. The primary objective of this thesis was to determine how the compression strength of filament-wound composite cylinders vary with increasing loading offset angle. Therefore, the compression strengths of composite cylinders and aluminum cylinders subjected to compressive axial loading under different loading angles were analyzed. Two different test fixture designs were developed and constructed to vary the loading angle by 5 deg, 10 deg and 15 deg. Two-layered and three-layered composite cylinders were manufactured using the filament-winding technique and a winding angle of 45 deg was used. The experimental tests were conducted to verify the results obtained by a numerical analysis.
