Optical Damage Resistant Impurities in Lithium Niobate,

Abstract:

Magnesium, zinc and some other impurities substituting mainly for the lithium sites drastically change optical properties of LiNbO3. In Particular the value of optical damage photorefraction in LiNbOMe me Mg,Zn. is sharply reduced compared with undoped LiNbO3. Similarly Me impurities tend to suppress so-called dark trace effect that means stable darkening under intensive visible laser radiation. The dependences of optical properties on Me concentrations demonstrate some common features. First of all they reveal threshold concentration values 5.5 mol. Mg 2-4 or 7.7 mol. Zn 4-6 for congruent LiNbO3 which correspond to step like change of optical properties such as IR-absorption and ESR spectra, luminescent characteristics and nonlinear parameters.
