Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance Services for the Aviation Industry Using Satellite Technology,

The air transport industry is once again gearing up to embrace satellite technology. The industry has traditionally provided its own communications systems and services to support aircraft operations and is well-positioned to continue this tradition into the satellite era. International ACARS service will be available in 1987 with AvSat services following on some two years later. As before, many technical and institutional problems remain to be solved, which will prove very challenging for the industry. This time, however, there is a sound economic basis on which to proceed. This makes the likelihood of meeting and overcoming these challenges very high.
