Impregnated Fiber Glass Yarn for Reinforcing Fiber Optic Cables,
Abstract:
A novel proprietary polymeric coating has been developed to impregnate glass fibers in a parallel position to produce a ribbon-shaped fiber glass yarn. The physical properties of these yarns have been determined and compared to conventional glass fibers. The effects of temperature, humidity, and chemical environment on the strength and flexibility of impregnated glass yarns were investigated and compared. Requirements for reinforcing fiber optic cables have been determined and found to be satisfied by fiber glass impregnated yarn. Several fiber optic cable designs have been fabricated successfully by the cable industry using the impregnated fiber glass yarn as the main reinforcing material. Author
