RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) Unit: Best in Sewage Treatment for Saudi Arabia,
Abstract:
The Rotating Biological Contactors RBC unit is a secondary biological treatment unit for waste water. The system consists of a number of large diameter plastic or expanded metal discs mounted on a horizontal shaft and placed in a reaction vessel which is often of a semi-circular cross-section. Numerous terms are used throughout the wastewater treatment literature to designate RBCs. Among the trade terms in current use are the Bio-Disc, Bio-Surf, Aero-Surf, Surfact, Bio-Sperial, Rotating Disc, etc. The RBC units have become widely accepted in recent years, notably in the United States, which is evidenced by the great number of plants operating or under construction and by the influx of several new RBC manufacturers competing into the market. The unit suits best the requirements of Saudi Arabia and its manufacture can be carried out locally. Engineers operating in Saudi Arabia should be encouraged to keep their designs as simple as possible.
