Method for Shaping Woman's Hat Brim.
Abstract:
This invention generally relates to headgear and more particularly to the hat brim of a U.S. Navy womans hat. Prior art hat brims use layers of textiles including synthetic hair cloth, treated buckram and felt. Combinations of these materials are layered and stitched together. Materials used to date absorb moisture and lose their shape when wetted or when subjected to hot, moist conditions. A U.S. Navy womans hat brim comprises a 15 MIL sheet material of the copolymer surlin ethylene that is bonded to a felt material and then sandwiched between two layers of outer materials. The brim is then stitched together. Following this the hat brim is heat softened and shaped, thereby imparting a permanent set on cooling. The contour remains stable when subjected to heat, moisture, extremes of temperature and severe wear in varying environments. The fabrication is easier than in present methods.
