Optical Fiber Directional Coupler Method.
Abstract:
A method for forming an optical fiber directional coupler comprising the steps of preferentially etching a groove into a flat surface of a first dielectric substrate to a depth such that when an optical fiber is disposed therein, the top of its core rises to approximately the flat surface of the substrate embedding a first optical fiber in the etched groove removing that portion of the first optical fiber above the flat surface of the dielectric substrate using the flat surface as a reference plane repeating the etching, embedding, and removing steps to produce a matching second optical fiber embedded in a groove of a second dielectric substrate and overlapping and aligning the first and second dielectric substrates so that the first and second optical fibers are aligned lengthwise in parallel adjacency to realize an optical coupling region.
