Abstract:

The patent application relates to a method of machining ceramics to prevent flaws. The method makes use of a single point diamond cutting tool in which a laser light is directed onto the material ahead of the cutter. The laser light heats the ceramic so that the ceramic material is removed by plastic flow rather than by the normal fracturing process of cutting.
