Progress Report on the Study of the Effect of Muzzle Brake Design on the Recoil of Guns, 1
Abstract:
A caliber .50 ballistic pendulum for measuring the efficiency of various nuzzle-brake designs is described. The effect of 1 baffle spacing, 2 nozzle angle, 3 diffuser-cone angle and 4 outlet reversal angle has been determined. The results show that 1 There is not much gain in efficiency when the baffle spacing exceeds a 1-in. opening 2 calibers. 2 A nozzle angle of 30 deg with a baffle spacing of 1 14 in. is the most efficient. 3 A diffuser cone is not necessary to obtain greater efficiency in brake action. 4 A flat baffle is more efficient than a baffle having any degree of reversal angle up to 60 deg.
