Wideband Waveguide Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell.
Abstract:
The results of an effort to improve the performance specifications of acousto-optic Bragg cells are reported. Various configurations of multiple tilted SAW transducers, including phased arrays, have been investigated theoretically and experimentally to find the most efficient combination which would provide a 700 MHz acousto-optic bandwidth. Investigated were Bragg cells fabricated on Ti diffused LiNb03 waveguides as well as Ti diffused LiNb03 waveguides with Nb205 thin film overlays. Theoretical and experimental investigations were based on the use of a CW semiconductor laser. Experimentally determined optical field profiles were used to calculate the diffraction efficiency and RF power requirements across the passband. A Bragg cell consisting of 6 tilted transducers was designed, fabricated, and tested, exhibiting 700 MHz bandwidth and 2.8RF watt diffraction efficiency. The Bragg cell operates between 770 MHz and 1470 MHz.
