Human Factors Affecting ICAM Implementation.

Abstract:

In Phase I of this project, a list of human factors issues generic to computer-integrated manufacturing CIM in the batch environment was developed. Each of these issues was then examined in detail to determine the state of the art of human factors work in this area. An extensive bibliography was developed for these issues. In Phase II, the results of this analysis were used to select a set of three case studies, with the ICM contractors, to be examined in detail. These case studies were selected to include the major issues of human factors in CIM, as well as to allow for an examination of human factors issues across the system developement cycle. The case study results and recommendations were presented at a workshop in Detroit, Michigan, held April 29, 1981, as part of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers 1981 International Conference and Exposition. Important recommendations drawn from the case studies included the suggestion that human factors issues be considered early in the system design cycle, and that human factors issues require consideration throughout the entire cycle.
