Low Cost Routes to Acetylenic Intermediates
Abstract:
A number of palladium catalyst systems were prepared and evaluated for their rate of displacement of bromine from bromobenzene by 2-methyl-3-butyn- 2-ol. Initial results showed no rate increase over state-of-the-art catalysts. A new approach to the synthesis of 4,4-di3-ethynylphenoxydiphenyl ATS was conceived and successfully carried out. The new method is eased upon reaction of 4,4-di3-bromophenoxydiphenyl sulfone, followed by replacement of the bromines by 2-methyl-3-butyn-3-ol and hydrolytic removal of acetone. This method should provide a substantial improvement in cost over the current method which requires the use of 3-hydroxyphenylacetylene.
