Abstract:

The tensile properties of spun-yarn, flight-suit weight HT-4, Durette, Nomex I, Kynol, cotton, nylon and polyester fabrics have been measured during exposure to bilateral radiant heat fluxes in the range 0.2 to 0.9 calsq cmsec. Specially designed test equipment allows testing at times as short as a few seconds after initiation of exposure. All of the fabrics tested lost at least 50 of their strength in the first 6 seconds of exposure at flux levels of 0.4 calsq cmsec and at least 75 of their strength after 6 seconds at 0.7 cal sq cmsec and above. Of those fabrics tested, Ht-4 provides the greatest degree of protection and polyester provides the least protection against a high heat flux. Studies were also made of launderability of HT-4 fabric, abrasion of Kevlar webbing, weaving of BBB fabric, and other analyses requested by AFML.
