Correlation of Cooling Velocity of the Standard Jominy Hardenability Test with the Cooling Velocity within the Cross-Section of Plates.
Abstract:
This report contains the results of a study designed to correlate the cooling velocity of the standard Jominy hardenability test bar with the cooling velocity within the cross-section of plates of various thicknesses, a study sponsored by Watertown Arsenal. The study was made on steels of four different analyses, two of which were of the cast and two of the rolled grades. Cooling rates at 1300 F. were obtained along the length of standard Jominy end-quench bars from each steel. Cooling rates at 1300 F. were also obtained at the center and at half the distance from the surface to the center of plate with thicknesses of approximately 12, 34, 1, 1-12, 2 and 4 inches. The effect of cast and rolled structures on each of two compositions and the effect of quenching from 1600 F. and from 1700 F. in oil and in water were studied. The information in this report has been condensed from material contained in two progress reports to Watertown Arsenal, dated June 2, 1984, and July 23, 1942.
