The Tempering of Martensite

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: ADA950514 | Open PDF

Abstract:

The time-temperature relation for the loss of tetragonality of martensite was determined for a plain carbon steel .95 C.. The time and temperature are related through a heat of activation relation. This heat of activation is of the order of 34,000 cal.gm. mol. These data indicate that appreciable tempering of the first formed martensite can occur with moderate cooling rates upon quenching if the Mg temperature is significantly above room temperature. Graphs are presented for estimating the amount of tempering, in the steel studied, during any tempering treatment, as well as during quenching.
