Abstract:

The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center NAVFAC EXWC was tasked with determining the feasibility of combining Nitinol NiTi superelastic metal alloy with ElectroSpark Deposition ESD technology to increase the cavitation erosion resistance of fluid machinery utilized by the Department of Defense DOD. EXWC examined several industrial pump materials and compared their relative cavitation erosion resistance. The ESDd Nitinol was also examined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry DSC and Dilatometry DIL for changes in its thermo-mechanical properties due to ESD. Microscopy was conducted to examine the metallurgical bond established by the ESD process, and its subsequent erosion, per ASTM G32. As a comparison, a known erosion-resistant, weld-friendly alloy called Stellite 6registered was ESDd and its cavitation erosion resistance compared to that of Nitinol.
