Abstract:

This technical note is the final report for the 2014 Directed Energy Internship program at the US Army Research Laboratory. Six interns were mentored by 4 government employees. The projects included 1 a comparison of traditional erbium Ersilica SiO2 optical fiber to designs using Er alumina Al2O3 nanoparticles, 2 chirped seed amplification in a 1.6-kW ytterbium Yb fiber amplifier, 3 custom components for a 100-W Er amplifier, and 4 performance of coherent beam combining and power usage in fiber laser arrays with high fill-factor output. Three reports written by the interns are included as Appendices A through C. A report on the third project was published separately as ARL-TN-0672.
