Chad: An Overview of a Country Plagued with Internal Strife and Regional Conflict

The Chadian government is fragile as a result of social, political, economic, and military instability. All of these internal matters present major challenges for Chadian citizens, regional alliances, and international organizations. The Chadian government does not have the resources to address these problems without internal change, support from African institutions, and significant contributions from the international community. Chads problems consist of tribal and class cleavages, poor economic growth and development, poor military organization and lack of professionalism, political fragility, and corruption. Chads problems are compounded because of external factors such as the Darfur crisis in Sudan and regional conflicts. Chadian government efforts to deal with social, political, economic, and military problems lack resources and a coordinated strategy. A comprehensive strategy encompassing the national, regional, and international dimensions of the crisis will allow Chad to move toward peace and stability both within Chad and between Chad and its neighbors.
