Simulating the Resonant Acoustic Mixer

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: ADA586660 | Open PDF

Abstract:

This report utilizes a state-of-the-art multiphase physics computer code to develop a rationale and a procedure for simulating the fluid dynamics of the Resonant Acoustic Mixer. This type of mixer does not require the use of blades to create high shear in the mixable medium. Rather it uses acoustic vibrations to couple vorticity and pressure fluctuations to create small mixing zones throughout the sample. This report uses computational fluid dynamics to study the mixers physics. Two mixing test problems are solved, one for a mixture of Oxygen and Nitrogen, a second for a two high viscosity materials. Results are presented for each case, and additional research is planned and documented.
