reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: ADA561044 | Open PDF

Abstract:

While the Army and Air Force components of the National Guard incorporate their parent services established senior leader development strategies, the National Guard still lacks a cohesive strategy that incorporates the parents strategies with the distinctive requirements of National Guard leadership. The National Guard needs leaders who will be its advocates, who will inform the parent services and civilian leadership of the unique capabilities offered by the nations only dual-mission military service. This paper examines the strategic leader competencies that will be required of future senior officers in the National Guard, the National Guards current senior leader development process compared with that of the parent services, shortfalls in senior leader preparation strategy and execution, and potential options to mitigate any shortcomings in preparing National Guard leaders for strategic and national-level positions.
