Abstract:

War games are nothing new and are used by most militaries in one form or another. The war game Simple Surface Warfare Model SSM was developed by the Swedish National Defence College to train cadets and test military plans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate SSM as a war game, and to determine its strengths and weaknesses. The game was tailored for teaching basic marine tactics and was designed to be engaging to use. During a 2-week exercise, 27 cadets divided into four groups planned and executed a marine mission. Surveys were used to show how the cadets evaluated the war game on the concepts of training, experience, feedback, influence on the real situation, and immersion. In addition, researchers and trained military instructors evaluated the cadets performance during the exercise and the after action review. The results show that the cadets gave the war game overall high ratings on the concepts, but gave significantly lower ratings for the concept of influence on the real situation. Overall, the cadets experience with this war game was a success. The presentation includes 27 briefing charts.
