Abstract:

Personnel security clearances are used to verify that national security information-which in some cases could cause exceptionally grave damage to U.S. national defense or foreign relations if disclosed-is entrusted only to individuals who have proven reliability and loyalty to the nation. Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the nations defense and intelligence needs grew, prompting increased demand for personnel with security clearances.
