UNAMID: A Case Study
Abstract:
In 2007, United Nations Security Council Resolution UNSCR 1769 established the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur UNAMID. This mission deployed under the same mandate troops from the United Nations UN and the African Union AU to support the peace process in Darfur, Sudan. UNAMID is unique among current missions because the UN and the AU share responsibility for the missions failure or success. Is UNAMID enough To answer this question, the author analyzed the role of UNAMID within current political, tactical, and strategic domains. He highlights the strengths and weaknesses of this mission and offers some ideas to improve its performance in the field.
