Design of the ONR AxWJ-2 Axial Flow Water Jet Pump
Abstract:
An axial flow water jet pump has been designed for model testing. The design is based on the requirements of a notional high speed ship. The potential flow blade method PBD-14MTFLOW was used for the blade shaping. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes codes CFX and Fluent were used to evaluate the designs. This model pump was specifically designed for model testing in the NSWCCD 36 Inch Water Tunnel, the Johns Hopkins University water tunnel, and the Rolls-Royce Hydrodynamic Research Centre water tunnel. Each water tunnel has unique requirements. This report describes the design of the pump, including the methods and philosophy used in the shaping of the hub, casing, rotor, and stator. A comparison of the predictions from the three methods is included. The predicted full scale pump efficiency is 92 the predicted model scale efficiency is 90. It is recommended that this pump be manufactured and tested at all three facilities.
