Abstract:

The changes in capabilities, philosophies and techniques being utilized in the private and public sectors will continue to make logistics curricula design a challenge. This research study utilized literature reviews to identify 8 competencies required for mid-level logistics leaders to succeed now and in the future. Programs from ten academic institutions including AFIT and seven of the top 10 programs were compared by analyzing their coverage of the eight competencies. The research highlighted that all of the schools are teaching the majority of the competencies. The programs with MBAs provided a strong business foundation of supply chain managementlogistics courses. AFIT adequately addresses all of the competencies except globalization and FinanceCost Control. These deficiencies can easily be corrected by making the International logistics course a core course and adding a FinanceCost Control course. Taking a more interdisciplinary and inter-industry approach to the future competencies identified in this research will ensure students gain current, hands on education in the critical areas of Networkingcomputing, supply chain management and logistics operations.
