Mechanical Failures of Metals in Service
Abstract:
For many years the National Bureau of Standards has made examinations of metal parts that have failed in service for evidence hearing on the causes of failure. Thirty-five such cases representing the most frequently observed types of failures are described, and the factors of design, fabrication, or use contributing to these failures are presented. The characteristics by which the various types of fractures can be recognized are discussed, and recommended precautions that should be observed to reduce mechanical failures of metals in service are included.
