Abstract:

A sedimentation study of the Middle Mississippi River, between River Miles 63 and 57, was conducted to study sediment transport mechanics of two side channels, Schenimann Chute and Picayune Chute. A hydraulic micro model was used to assess structural design alternatives to develop physical and biological diversity within the side channels. The study concluded that favorable diversity could be achieved through the use of alternating dikes or hard-points, dredging, and notches in the dikes and closure structures. The study also showed that the desired designs would not have an effect on bed response of the main commercial navigation channel. Micro modeling is extremely small scale physical hydraulic sediment transport modeling of a river or stream.
