Environmental and Navigation Improvement Study of Wolf Island, Mississippi River, Miles 936.5 to 929.

An environmental and navigation study of Wolf Island, Miles 936.5 to 929, Lower Mississippi River, was conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The study was initiated in order to evaluate sedimentation trends in a major side channel of the Mississippi River and to access various structural design alternative impacts. The goal was to maintain or improve the existing navigation channel through the study reach. Ensure that the side channel would not capture additional flows and eventually become the main channel, and preserve vital fisheries habitat within the side channel. A hydraulic micro model was used for this analysis. The model contained scales of 1 inch600 feet horizontal and 1 inch50 feet vertical. A team of various representatives from the U,S, Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division, Memphis District, St. Louis District, Missouri Department of Conservation, Kentucky Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service participated and formulated ideas in the model study.
