The Operational Leadership of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm

Abstract:

Most of the biographies of General Schwarzkopf, including his autobiography, typically portray him as a military genius and a hero. Indeed, the overwhelming success of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm certainly substantiates the claim that he was one of the most successful operational commanders in our history. He also had his share of faults as an operational leader. This paper takes a close look at some of his successes and failures during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The intent is to provide a critical analysis of General Schwarzkopfs operational leadership that will be of value to future operational commanders.
