Alkaline Hydrolysis Conversion of Nitrocellulose Fines
Abstract:
The conversion of 1,125,000 pounds of bone-dry nitrocellulose fines into a liquid fertilizer was documented. Alkaline hydrolysis was the conversion method using potassium hydroxide to dissolve the nitrocellulose, phosphoric acid to adjust the pH and then landspread of the resultant liquid fertilizer. Fertilizer nutrient value was 1.3 nitrogen N, 8.0 potassium K2O and 0.9 phosphorus P2O5. Conversion met all applicable federal and state safety and environmental regulations.
