Abstract:

The author examines Chinas perception of the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea ROK. He believes continued acceptance of the status quo is not guaranteed and that developments in the Sino-American relationship and the course of reunification of the Korean Peninsula will affect attitudes in the future. The author discusses Chinas general post-Cold War security policy and apparent quiet acceptance of the ROK alliance as a part of the favorable status quo in Northeast Asia. Beijing also displays a changed attitude towards the United States political and military presence in Northeast Asia. The future of the political division on the Korean Peninsula is of key importance to Chinas perception of the U.S.-ROK alliance.
