Military Airlift: Savings Achievable by Eliminating Support Operations at Torrejon Air Base, Spain.

Abstract:

The Department of Defense DOD increasingly relies on its global network of en route bases to provide logistical support to military airlift aircraft during contingencies. According to Air Mobility Command documents, two en route bases in Spain-Torrejon and Zaragoza-supported about 50 percent of the Air Mobility Commands airlift missions during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. However, according to Spanish government officials, Torrejon Air Bases proximity to Madrid, the capital of Spain, makes its use by the U.S. military highly visible and politically sensitive. This report addresses 1 the future use of Torrejon Air Base in Spain for airlift operations, 2 the cost savings that would be realized if the Air Mobility Commands presence at that base was ended, and 3 alternatives the Air Mobility Command is considering to the current use of Torrejon Air Base.
