Archaeological Curation-Needs Assessments.
Abstract:
The report presents the findings of the St. Louis Districts assessment of the archaeological collections recovered from five installations. A total of 1,101 cubic feet of artifacts and 407 linear feet of associated documentation comprise the collections. These collections were located in 20 storage areas. Repositories were assessed for the adequacy of their storage structures, maintenance of facilities, existence of environmental controls, security measures, protection from fire and water damage, and the current status of the collections. All of the storage facilities reviewed were found to be substandard. Major deficiencies in the cleaning, labeling, packaging, and storage of artifacts were present. In order to correct these deficiencies, recommendations are made for facility improvements. A plan for safeguarding the collections is presented. In addition, a bibliography of the archaeological survey reports relevant to the collections is provided for each installation.
