Abstract:

A portable sensitive alpha-particle detector has been developed for scanning and surveying small amounts of U-metal on various surfaces. Although there are various possible ways of detecting alpha particles, for the sake of simplicity and serviceability, the method using an ionization chamber in connection with a portable electrometer circuit is employed. Units built in this laboratory have proven very satisfactory. The high sensitivity that has been achieved with these instruments approximates counter sensitivities.
